Rila Monastery, deep in the Rila Mountains of southwest Bulgaria at about 1,100 metres, is the country's largest and most important Orthodox monastery, a UNESCO site. Founded in the 10th century by St. John of Rila, it long guarded Bulgarian culture. Its four-storey cloisters are striped black, white and red; the central church glows with vivid Orthodox frescoes.

Rila Monastery is a UNESCO Orthodox monastery deep in the Rila Mountains and a sacred site of Bulgarian national faith and spirit. Spring–summer–autumn (May–Oct) is best, when the mountains are verdant or ablaze with autumn color; in winter, snow-clad scenery feels even more sacred and you'll need warm clothing. Its signature is the tiered arcades in black, white and red stripes, and the Nativity of the Virgin Church, whose interior and exterior are covered with extremely vivid, gilded Orthodox frescoes — the pinnacle of Bulgarian fresco art. Please dress modestly when visiting. About 2–2.5 hrs from Sofia, often done as a day trip.
