Bayankhongor is both a province and the name of its administrative centre in southwestern Mongolia, spanning the southern foothills of the Khangai Mountains and crossing into the Gobi. Northward lie Khangai alpine meadows; southward stretch rolling Gobi-steppe with salt lakes, sand dunes and snow-capped Gobi-Altai peaks. It is an ideal place to experience nomadic pastoral life, camel trekking and hot springs, with the provincial capital lying some 600-odd kilometres from Ulaanbaatar and the Shargaljuut hot springs and lake groups nearby.
