📍 Destination Overview
Kernave, on the Neris River in central Lithuania, served as the Grand Duchy's first capital in the 13th-14th centuries. Its defining feature is four terraced defensive hill-forts rising from the riverbank, among the most important pagan-era fortifications, rich with medieval artifacts. Destroyed by the Teutonic Knights, it now forms part of the UNESCO 'Lithuanian Capitals' site.
