Fergana is a modern city in southern Uzbekistan's Fergana Valley, founded in the late 19th century on a neat grid of leafy boulevards, gardens and wineries. It takes its name from the medieval Persian-Arab scholar al-Fergani. With a park and local history museum in town, and the silk town of Margilan, the historic cities of Kokand and a richly fertile basin close by, Fergana offers an authentic, relaxed slice of Central Asian life.
