Lake Atitlan Travel Guide

Lake Atitlan is located in the western plateau of Guatemala. It is a huge and deep crater lake formed by ancient volcanic activity. It is about 1,500 meters above sea level and is surrounded by three towering, symmetrical and beautiful cone-shaped volcanoes (Atitlan, Toliman, and San Pedro). Bao is famous for its blue and clear lake water, majestic volcanic background and indigenous villages scattered along the lakeside that preserve the vivid traditional Mayan culture. It is beautiful, quiet and unique, and is often praised as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. It is mild throughout the year, and the dry season is better from November to April. The most breathtaking thing is the blend of lake light and volcanoes - the deep blue lake water fills the crater surrounded by mountains, and the three symmetrical cone-shaped volcanoes surround the lakeside like a barrier, creating a dreamy light and shadow scene at dawn and dusk. Even more culturally charming are the villages and towns with their own characteristics dotted around the lake - most of them are the homes of the Mayan indigenous people for generations, and the Mayan language is vividly preserved.
