Tyre (Sour) is an ancient city on Lebanon's Mediterranean coast, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and one of the most powerful city-states of antiquity. Its Roman-era heritage is outstanding: the Al-Bass site with its triumphal arch, stone-built hippodrome and vast necropolis of sarcophagi, plus an archaeological area of colonnaded streets and Byzantine baths. The town also offers clear protected beaches and sea-turtle conservation, spanning history from the Bronze Age to the Crusades.
