Plaza Mayor

Introduction

Plaza Mayor is the heart and essence of Trinidad's old city—this elegant, refined central square, with its harmonious colonial style and surrounding historic buildings, concentrates the charming appeal of this World Heritage old city. The square has old cobblestones, a green little garden in the center with white wrought-iron railings, palm trees and classical small sculptures—refined and elegant. Around it are Trinidad's most important, beautiful colonial buildings—most striking the plain but solemn Holy Trinity Church (Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad) on one side, and several lavish mansions built by sugar barons, now mostly museums (Romance Museum, Colonial Architecture Museum, Archaeology Museum etc.) preserving colonial furniture, art and life—a glimpse of past luxury.
