Introduction

Odense is the hometown of the world's fairy-tale master Hans Christian Andersen, and this modern H.C. Andersen Museum is the venue to honor the great writer and enter his wondrous fairy-tale world, the number-one sight in the fairy-tale city of Odense. Andersen is among the greatest fairy-tale authors in Danish and world literature; his classics like The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, The Little Match Girl, The Emperor's New Clothes and Thumbelina have nourished generations of childhoods worldwide and are immortal treasures, and he was born in Odense in 1805. This recently rebuilt modern museum is a highly creative, artistic building (partly integrated underground and into gardens, blending with the surrounding fairy-tale garden): rather than displaying artifacts conventionally, it leads visitors into Andersen's life and his fairy-tale universe through immersive, artistic, imaginative and poetic means, via dreamlike exhibition spaces, art installations, light, sound and interaction, moving and inspiring visitors as if inside a tale.
