Introduction
Sutro Radio Tower crowns the summit of Mount Sutro in the northwest corner of San Francisco. Construction began in 1966 and the tower entered service in 1973 as one of the tallest freestanding structures in the Bay Area. Its three-legged steel lattice rises 298 meters with a tip elevation of about 553 meters above sea level, and it was built by Sutro Television Company to improve broadcast coverage across the region. The distinctive tripod form resists high winds and seismic loads on the exposed ridge, and the tower remains the primary transmission source for major San Francisco television and FM radio signals. Often veiled in coastal fog, it reads as a futuristic sculpture on the skyline and serves as the landmark destination for hikers climbing Mount Sutro.
