Introduction
St. Hyacinth Basilica is another major religious building of Chicago's Polish community, located in the heart of Polish Village and opened in 1921, designed by architects Worthmann and Steinbach. The church blends Polish ecclesiastical tradition with Romanesque Revival elements, marked by twin symmetrical bell towers and a red-brick facade. In 1992 Pope John Paul II elevated it to a minor basilica, making it one of only a handful of Polish basilicas in the United States. The basilica preserves relics of its patron St. Hyacinth, exquisite stained glass, portraits of Polish saints, and ornate altar decoration. St. Hyacinth is one of the patron saints of Poland, and the basilica carries the deep ethnic and religious sentiments of Polish immigrants, symbolizing the continuation of Polish Catholic tradition in America.
