Introduction
St. Mary of the Angels is one of the most representative religious buildings of Chicago's Polish community, located in the heart of Polish Village and designed by Polish-American architects Worthmann and Pawlowski between 1899 and 1920. This monumental Neo-Baroque church is famous for its twin symmetrical bell towers and great central dome, its silhouette modeled on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome and affectionately known as the "Polish St. Peter." The lavishly decorated interior preserves exquisite stained glass, portraits of Polish saints, and gilded ornamentation, reflecting the deep religious devotion and architectural ambition of early 20th-century Polish immigrants. In 2003 the parish nearly closed due to clergy shortages but was transferred to a traditional Latin Mass order under direct Vatican oversight, preserving its sacred mission.
