Introduction
The San Francisco Armory, built in 1914 and sited on Mission Street between 14th and 15th Streets, is a roughly 200,000-square-foot Moorish Revival fortress originally constructed for the California National Guard. Its crenellated walls, corner turrets, and massive brick facade give it the appearance of a medieval castle in the heart of the Mission District. For much of the 20th century it served as a military warehouse and training facility before falling into disuse. In 2006 the adult entertainment company Kink.com purchased the building as its headquarters, sparking public controversy. Today the Armory also hosts art exhibitions, electronic music parties, film shoots, and underground cultural events, making it one of San Francisco's most contradictory landmarks.
