Introduction
The Old United States Mint, located at the intersection of Market Street and Fifth Street in San Francisco, is a Classical Revival granite building completed in 1874. Designed by architect Alfred B. Mullett and modeled on ancient Greek temples, the building features Ionic columns, massive granite walls, and earthquake-resistant iron framing, making it one of the few large San Francisco public buildings to survive the 1906 earthquake. The Mint produced U.S. coins from 1874 to 1937, minting over $500 million in gold and silver coins, witnessing the California Gold Rush and San Francisco's financial history. After ceasing operations in 1937, it served as a California history museum and has been operated by the California Historical Society since 2003, hosting exhibitions and public events.
