Introduction
The Marina District is located in northern San Francisco, bounded by Lombard Street to the south, San Francisco Bay to the north, Fort Mason to the east, and the Presidio to the west. It is the city's most waterfront upscale residential neighborhood. Built on the site of the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition, the reclaimed "Palace of Fine Arts" area was later converted to housing. The district's core public spaces include Crissy Field lawn, Marina Green, and the Yacht Harbor, with views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. The Marina was the worst-affected area in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake due to soil liquefaction, but was rebuilt while retaining its elegant low-rise apartment and single-family home character.
