Introduction
The Holy Virgin Cathedral, located at 5210 Geary Boulevard in San Francisco's Richmond District, is the cathedral seat of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOR) on the West Coast. Its formal name is the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin "Joy of All Who Sorrow." Founded in 1961 and completed in 1965, it was designed by architect Mikhail Sergeeff in the 12th-century Moscow-Suzdal style of traditional Russian church architecture. The building features five onion domes covered in gold leaf and mosaics, with interior frescoes by Greek-born painter Nicholas Papadakis depicting the Theotokos and saints. The cathedral carries the faith heritage of Russian White emigres and serves as the heart of San Francisco's Orthodox community.
