Introduction
The Harlem Fire Watchtower, located in Marcus Garvey Park in Harlem, was built in 1856-1857 and is the oldest cast-iron structure in New York City and one of the few 19th-century cast-iron fire watchtowers surviving in the United States. Standing about 14 meters tall and designed by Julius B. Kroehl, it was assembled from prefabricated cast-iron components and is a fine example of 19th-century iron engineering. Before telephones and telegraphs, watchmen scanned the city for smoke and rang the alarm bell, making the tower a key node in New York's early fire-protection system. Designated a New York City landmark in 1967, the tower was long closed due to deterioration and was fully dismantled, restored, and re-erected between 2015 and 2021. The tower and surrounding park now welcome visitors, offering a unique window into 19th-century urban infrastructure and Harlem history.
