Introduction
The African Burial Ground National Monument is located near Federal Plaza in Lower Manhattan, administered by the U.S. National Park Service, commemorating a seventeenth and eighteenth century African American burial site accidentally discovered during construction in 1991. The burial ground holds the remains of an estimated 15,000 enslaved and free African New Yorkers, and is one of the largest and earliest known African burial grounds in North America, of irreplaceable significance for understanding American slavery and the African diaspora. Designed by architect Rodney Leon and dedicated in 2007, the monument includes the Ancestral Libation Chamber and the Wall of Remembrance, presenting this long buried history through African cosmology and memorial architectural vocabulary. A visitor center exhibit and archaeological finds invite reflection on the founding of the United States and the history of slavery.
