Introduction
Burnham Park lines Chicago's lakefront along Lake Michigan from Roosevelt Road to North Avenue, about six miles long and 600 acres, named for Daniel Burnham, lead architect of the 1909 Plan of Chicago. Burnham and his colleagues proposed the park in the Plan to keep the entire lakefront public and free of private development. The park includes 23rd Street Beach, 31st Street Beach, Promontory Point, a chess pavilion and several playgrounds, serving as the core lakefront strip for Chicagoans to run, cycle, skate, swim and picnic. Connected to Lincoln Park on the north and Jackson Park on the south, it forms an 18-mile continuous lakefront trail, the best segment to experience Chicago's public lakefront ideal.
