Introduction

Prospect Park is a 526-acre park in central Brooklyn designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the designers of Central Park, in 1867, and considered their most mature work. The park centres on the 60-acre Prospect Park Lake, with the Long Meadow, Boathouse, Prospect Park Zoo, children's carousel and Prospect Park Botanic Garden. The site also holds the Lefferts Historic House and the Soldiers' and Sailors' Arch at the Grand Army Plaza entrance, Brooklyn's only lake. Free and open to all, the park is Brooklyn's green lung for running, cycling, kayaking, skating and dog walking, with weekend farmers' markets, summer outdoor performances and a winter ice rink keeping activity alive year-round.
