Introduction
The 9th St Garden and La Plaza Cultural are two adjacent East Village community gardens merged into a cultural oasis, jointly maintained by the GreenThumb programme and local residents. The 9th St Garden originated in the 1970s wave of reclaiming abandoned urban lots, growing vegetables, herbs and flowers that embody urban agriculture. La Plaza Cultural was founded by Puerto Rican artist Rafael Argentine Graciani and others, featuring mosaic murals, a painted stage and Latin American cultural themes, with year-round poetry readings, music performances and community festivals. Together they form a multi-functional space blending horticulture, art and community activity, a living museum of East Village grassroots culture and Latin immigrant tradition.
