Introduction
Le Petit Versailles is a tiny French-style community-built garden in New York's East Village, managed by the GreenThumb programme and the East Village Community Gardens coalition. Though small, it takes its inspiration from the parterres of Versailles, with symmetrical geometric beds, clipped boxwood and wrought-iron arches creating a miniature French court atmosphere. Roses, hydrangeas, perennials and seasonal annuals fill the beds, while mosaic benches, a small fountain and sculptural accents offer residents a hidden oasis for reading, sketching and community gatherings. Maintained by volunteers and open during community-set hours, the garden is a microcosm of New York's hundreds of community gardens and a symbol of East Village grassroots culture and urban ecological self-governance.
