Introduction
Old Westbury Gardens, in the village of Old Westbury in Nassau County on Long Island, is one of the best-preserved Gold Coast estate gardens. Financier John Shaffer Phipps built the estate in 1906 as a gift for his wife, with the Westbury House designed by English architect George Abraham Crawley in the style of Charles II England. The 200 acres of formal gardens include the Walled Garden, Lake Garden, Hydrangea Walk, Terrace Garden and Rose Garden, with planning support from famed landscape architect Pierre du Pont. Opened to the public in 1963 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is a superb window into Long Island's Gilded Age grandeur and English garden artistry.
