Introduction
The Singer Building, formerly at 149 Broadway in Manhattan, was the headquarters of the Singer Manufacturing Company. Designed by architect Ernest Flagg and completed in 1908, this 47-story, 612-foot skyscraper briefly held the title of the world's tallest building. A masterpiece of Beaux-Arts architecture, it was renowned for its ornate decoration, vertical lines, and crowning tower. The soaring three-story base showcased Singer sewing machines, while the upper floors offered bright office spaces, symbolizing early 20th-century New York commercial prosperity. Tragically, the building was demolished in 1968 to make way for One Liberty Plaza, becoming one of New York's most controversial demolitions and catalyzing the historic preservation movement. Though the Singer Building no longer exists, its photographs, drawings, and models survive in the New-York Historical Society and Museum of the City of New York, telling the story of this lost skyscraper's glory and loss.
