Introduction
The Edward Mooney House at 18 Cherry Street in Manhattan's Lower East Side, built around 1785, is one of New York City's oldest buildings and among the few surviving 18th-century structures in the area. This three-and-a-half-story brick building was constructed by butcher Edward Mooney, blending Georgian and Federal style elements that reflect the residential tastes of early New York's merchant class. In the early 19th century, the building served as a tavern, boarding house, and private residence, witnessing New York's evolution from a Dutch colonial town to a global metropolis. In the 1970s, efforts by the Museum of Chinese in America and community advocates saved the endangered structure from demolition, and it was designated a city landmark in 1983. Today, the facade retains its 18th-century brickwork, wedge-shaped window lintels, and iron anchoring, offering a precious artifact of early New York architectural history.
