Introduction
Eldridge Street Synagogue, located in Manhattan's Lower East Side, New York, was built in 1887 as the first large synagogue in the United States built by Eastern European Jewish immigrants and one of New York's most magnificent Jewish buildings. The architecture blends Romanesque and Moorish styles, with a facade known for its rose window and twin towers, and an interior featuring an exquisitely carved wooden ark, stained glass windows, and soaring vaults with superb craftsmanship. The synagogue was once the center of religious and cultural life for the Lower East Side Jewish community, witnessing the glorious history of New York's Jewish immigrants. The synagogue declined in the late 20th century and reopened in 2007 after restoration, now serving as the Eldridge Street Museum, displaying Jewish immigrant history and architectural art to the public, making it an excellent place to understand New York's immigrant history and Jewish culture.
