Introduction
Mission Dolores, also known as Mission San Francisco de Asis, is one of the oldest buildings in San Francisco, founded in 1791 by Spanish Franciscan missionaries. It is the sixth in the California mission chain and the only mission in San Francisco that still retains its original adobe structure. The adjacent Mission Dolores Basilica, completed in 1796, is the oldest intact church building still in use in California. The cemetery beside the church holds the remains of approximately eleven thousand Ohlone Native Americans and early settlers, an important witness to California Native and colonial history. The small and modest church interior preserves its eighteenth century appearance, with wooden ceilings, altar, and religious statues exuding the atmosphere of centuries. Adjacent to the culturally vibrant Mission District, Mission Dolores is an irreplaceable site for understanding California colonial history, Native American fate, and Spanish missionary traditions.
