California Living Musuem

Introduction

The California Living Museum, known as CALM, sits on a Kern River terrace northeast of Bakersfield and is a nonprofit combining a zoo, natural history museum and botanical garden. Opened in 1983, CALM focuses on California's native flora and fauna, housing injured or orphaned native animals that cannot be returned to the wild, including black bears, mountain lions, California condors, desert tortoises and many raptors. The indoor museum displays geology, paleontology and Native American cultural specimens from California's Central Valley, while outdoor trails connect native plant demonstration gardens with animal exhibits, making it a key place to understand California's native ecology and Central Valley natural history.
