Introduction
The New York Aquarium sits on the Coney Island waterfront in Brooklyn and is the only aquarium in New York City. One of the oldest continuously operating aquariums in the United States, it was founded in 1896 at Battery Park in Manhattan and moved to its current site in 1957. The 14-acre facility exhibits more than 500 species of marine life, including sharks, sea lions, jellies, penguins and octopuses. The signature exhibit Ocean Wonders: Sharks! features a 9,000-gallon coral reef display and many shark species. Sea lion feeding and training shows are a family favorite. Next to Coney Island beach and the Wonder Wheel, it is a classic summer family stop.
