Introduction
Chatham Square sits at the boundary of Manhattan's Lower East Side and Chinatown, a small traffic-loop plaza where Bowery, East Broadway, Mott and Oliver Streets converge. Named for Revolutionary War naval hero Samuel Chatham, the square features a statue of Lin Zexu donated by the Chinese community in the late 20th century, symbolizing Chinese-American contributions and an anti-opium spirit. The square is the geographic and social heart of Chinatown, surrounded by Chinese restaurants, dim sum parlors, herbal pharmacies and festival stalls, and serves as the center for Lunar New Year flower markets and Mid-Autumn celebrations.
