Introduction
Green-Wood Cemetery, located in Brooklyn between Fifth Avenue and 25th Street, was founded in 1838 and spans 478 acres. It is one of America's premier rural cemeteries and a National Historic Landmark since 1960. The grounds are celebrated for their rolling glacial hills, centuries-old trees and four lakes, making it a premier New York birdwatching spot outside of Olmsted's parks. Among those buried here are Horatio Greeley, Louis Comfort Tiffany and Jean-Michel Basquiat, along with many artists, merchants, politicians and war heroes. Battle Hill offers one of Brooklyn's highest points with views of Manhattan, and the cemetery hosts regular history tours, art exhibits and twilight birding walks.
