Introduction
The African Burial Ground National Monument, located in Lower Manhattan near Duane Street and Broadway, is the site of the largest colonial-era African-American cemetery in North America. An estimated 15,000 free and enslaved Africans were buried here, and the site was rediscovered in 1991 during construction of a federal office building. Following excavation and community advocacy, it became a National Historic Landmark in 1993 and a National Monument in 2006. The visitor center uses exhibits, media and artifacts to tell the buried history of African New Yorkers, while the outdoor memorial centers on Rodney Leon's Spirit of Return monument.
