Seven-Mile Bridge
Introduction
The Seven Mile Bridge is the signature span of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway, connecting Knights Key in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. It runs about 10.9 kilometers (6.79 miles), nearly seven miles as the name suggests. The bridge is the heart of the Overseas Highway, rebuilt from Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway bridge; when the new bridge opened in 1982, the old span was retained as a fishing pier. The roadway runs straight across the turquoise waters where the Gulf of Mexico meets the Atlantic, with sea color shifting from emerald to deep blue, offering one of America's most spectacular drives. A pullout at the midpoint affords views of the old bridge ruins and endless sea. The Seven Mile Bridge has appeared in films including True Lies and Licence to Kill and is an essential leg of any drive to Key West.
