Introduction

The St Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum stands at the southern tip of Anastasia Island in St Augustine, Florida, one of the oldest surviving lighthouses in the state. The current black-and-white spiral striped iron tower was built in 1874, 50 meters tall, replacing an earlier Spanish colonial watchtower. Climbing 219 spiral iron steps rewards visitors with panoramic views of the Atlantic and Matanzas Bay; on clear days the historic downtown of St Augustine is visible. The original keeper's house below now serves as a maritime museum, displaying 19th-century optical instruments, salvaged shipwreck artifacts, and St Augustine's maritime history. The site is also famous for ghost lore, said to be haunted by a former keeper's daughter, drawing paranormal enthusiasts.
