Introduction

London Bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona is the 1831 John Rennie London Bridge from the Thames, reassembled in the American desert. In 1968 the City of London auctioned the bridge, which could no longer bear modern traffic, and American entrepreneur Robert P. McCulloch purchased it for $2.46 million. The granite blocks were numbered, dismantled, shipped to Long Beach, California and trucked to Arizona, where the bridge was re-erected over a newly dug canal in 1971. The canal connects to Lake Havasu, making London Bridge a passage to an island in the lake. An English Village beside the bridge reproduces Tudor-style buildings, red phone booths and double-decker buses for a British atmosphere. The bridge is Lake Havasu City's most famous landmark and the quintessential "unexpected British attraction in America," drawing millions of visitors each year.
