Biltmore Estate

Introduction

Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina is the largest private home in the United States, completed in 1895 for George Washington Vanderbilt II of the railroad and shipping Vanderbilt family. Designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt in the French Renaissance style, the four-story chateau sits on roughly 8,000 acres and contains 250 rooms, 35 bedrooms, 43 bathrooms and 65 fireplaces, with architectural details and interiors modeled on the chateaux of France's Loire Valley. The grounds were laid out by Frederick Law Olmsted, the father of landscape architecture, and include formal gardens, a conservatory, wooded approaches and the Biltmore Winery. Still owned by Vanderbilt descendants and open to the public, the estate is a living museum of American architectural history and Gilded Age lifestyle, drawing more than a million visitors each year.
