Point Piedras Blancas

Introduction

Point Piedras Blancas is located on the San Simeon coast south of Big Sur in central California, and is one of the most important northern elephant seal rookeries on the North American continent. About 17,000 northern elephant seals gather here annually, with December to March being the pupping and mating season when thousands of seals can be seen densely covering the beach. Summer May-August is the molting season for adult seals, with large numbers still present. Viewing platforms and boardwalks are just tens of meters from the beach, allowing close observation of these massive creatures. Northern elephant seals are huge, with adult males reaching 2 tons and 4 meters, with a trunk-like nose giving them their name, making this one of California's most stunning wildlife viewing experiences.
