Old Post Office and Customshouse
Introduction
The Old Post Office and Customshouse is located near Mallory Square in Key West, Florida, and is a U.S. National Historic Landmark designed by architect Richard A. Gilbert and completed in 1891. This three-story coral stone building simultaneously served as a post office, customshouse, and courthouse, and was the southernmost federal government building in the United States at the time. The architecture blends Romanesque Revival style with local coral stone construction, with exterior walls built from locally quarried coral rock blocks, giving it unique Florida character. The building still functions as a post office today, one of the few 19th-century federal buildings still in operation. Visitors can enter to experience century-old postal history and mail postcards stamped with the Key West postmark.
