Introduction

Essex Town lies on the southern shore of Connecticut near the mouth of the Connecticut River, a historic New England village of roughly 6,000 residents named one of America's most beautiful small towns by Yankee Magazine. Main Street preserves 18th- and 19th-century Federal and Greek Revival houses, white-steepled churches and stone walls under old maples. The signature experience is the Essex Steam Train, which leaves the historic 1892 Essex Station for a narrated 12-mile round trip into the river valley and can be combined with a RiverQuest boat cruise past the 1900 Gillette Castle.
