Introduction

Biosphere 2 is located at the foot of the Santa Catalina Mountains north of Tucson, Arizona, and is an Earth science facility owned by the University of Arizona. It was built between 1987 and 1991 with funding from billionaire Edward Bass. The 3.14-acre sealed glass complex was originally designed to simulate Earth's ecosystems, and in 1991 eight "biospherians" lived sealed inside for two years in an unprecedented ecological experiment. Now open to the public, Biosphere 2 features six biomes: tropical rainforest, ocean, desert, savanna, wetland, and agricultural zone. It is an important research base for climate change, ecosystems, and Earth science, and a unique scientific tourist attraction.
