Introduction

Lake View Cemetery, located on Cleveland East Side, is one of the city most historically and culturally significant cemeteries. Established in 1869 and covering about 285 acres, it is the resting place of many prominent Cleveland industrialists, politicians, and cultural figures. The cemetery is known for its beautiful landscape, with winding roads, ancient trees, and elaborate monuments creating an outdoor sculpture park and history museum. The most famous burial is John D. Rockefeller, founder of Standard Oil, whose family plot occupies a prominent location. Other notable burials include President James A. Garfield with his magnificent monument, industrialist Marcus Almora, and numerous figures important to Cleveland development. The Garfield Monument is the cemetery most spectacular structure, a 180-foot circular tower honoring the assassinated 20th U.S. President.
