Introduction
The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site, located about 25 miles east of Houston, is the site of the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. On April 21, 1836, General Sam Houston's Texas army launched a surprise attack that defeated Mexican President Santa Anna's forces in just 18 minutes, directly leading to Texas independence. The park's centerpiece is a 570-foot obelisk monument, the world's tallest war memorial, visible from far distances. The monument houses a museum displaying battle artifacts, historical documents, and detailed accounts of Texas independence. The battlefield preserves the original terrain, and visitors can walk self-guided trails retracing the battle route. The park also features the Battleship Texas, moored in the Houston Ship Channel, adding another dimension to this epic history.
