Introduction

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is a pair of grand bridges spanning San Francisco Bay, connecting San Francisco and Oakland. About 13 km (8.4 mi) long, this double-deck suspension and cable-stayed bridge combination is one of the Bay Area's most vital transportation arteries and iconic structures — especially at night, when the eastern span's self-anchored suspension bridge lights up with thousands of LEDs alongside the Golden Gate Bridge, creating a stunning nightscape. The bridge has two sections: the western span (San Francisco to Yerba Buena Island), a traditional double-deck suspension bridge completed in 1936, and the eastern span (Yerba Buena Island to Oakland), rebuilt in 2013 as a striking self-anchored suspension bridge after the 1989 earthquake damaged the original — one of the world's widest such bridges. Though less touristy than the Golden Gate, the Bay Bridge carries far more traffic, the Bay Area's true transportation lifeline. From the Ferry Building or Embarcadero, you can view its imposing form; driving across is an experience in itself.
