Introduction

The Walters Art Museum, located in downtown Baltimore, is one of America most distinguished comprehensive art museums, renowned for a sweeping collection spanning five millennia of human civilization. Its origins are legendary: in the mid-19th century, railroad magnate William Walters and his son Henry devoted their lives to amassing precious artifacts and artworks from Europe, Asia, and the Near East, ultimately bequeathing the entire collection to the City of Baltimore in 1934. The holdings exceed 36,000 objects, encompassing Egyptian mummies, Greek and Roman sculpture, medieval illuminated manuscripts, Renaissance master paintings, Islamic metalwork, and Asian ceramics and paintings. Raphael Madonna and Child, Rembrandt portraits, exquisite French enamels, and Byzantine jewelry rank among its greatest treasures. The building itself is a work of art; after a multi-million-dollar renovation in 2005, a grand central court interweaves with five floors of galleries.
