Introduction

Shedd Aquarium stands at the south end of Grant Park in Chicagos Museum Campus, opened in 1929 in a neoclassical building and once the largest indoor aquarium in the world. It exhibits more than 32,000 aquatic animals spanning Caribbean coral reefs, Pacific Northwest cold waters, and Amazon flooded forests. The showstopper is the Oceanarium, a 1.8-million-liter habitat holding beluga whales, Pacific giant octopuses, and green sea turtles, one of the few American aquariums to display belugas. The Amazon Flooded Forest simulates annual water rise and fall with piranhas, anacondas, and electric eels. The Polar Play Zone features playful belugas and sea otters. An on-site rescue and rehabilitation center shows Chicagos wildlife rescue work to the public, making Shedd a model of education through entertainment and a top family destination.
