Introduction

The Santa Barbara Botanic Garden is located on Mission Canyon Road in the northern part of Santa Barbara, California, one of the premier botanic gardens in the United States focused on native plant conservation and display, with California native plants as its core collection since its founding in 1926. The garden spans about 78 acres on a hillside, rising from the historic adobe at the entrance up to slopes with views over Santa Barbara and the Channel Islands, with more than 1,000 California native species displayed by ecological zone along the way. The most impressive feature is the roughly 11-acre native redwood grove, growing vigorously in the Santa Barbara Mediterranean climate with quiet, cool trails beneath the canopy, a rare redwood forest experience in Southern California. Other specialty sections include the desert garden, Mediterranean ecosystem, Channel Islands endemics, and meadow wildflower areas, a kaleidoscope of color in spring bloom.
