Introduction
St. Patrick Cathedral, at Fifth Avenue and 50th Street in Manhattan, is New York most magnificent religious building and an outstanding example of American Neo-Gothic architecture. Begun in 1858, the Catholic cathedral was delayed by the Civil War and funding shortages, with the main structure completed in 1878, spires in 1888, and interiors finished in the 1900s, spanning nearly half a century. Designed by James Renwick Jr. in white marble, the twin spires rise about 100 meters, the facade with three arched portals and a rose window displaying refined medieval Gothic vocabulary. The interior stretches over 100 meters, with a high vaulted ceiling painted in gold, blue, and red, stained-glass windows telling biblical stories, sunlight filtering through in dreamlike colors. The main altar features fine marble and bronze, side aisles hold dozens of small chapels, with the Lady Chapel noted for delicate Marian decoration. Seating over 3,000, the cathedral is the spiritual heart of New York Catholics, hosting funerals for presidents and notables. A $177 million restoration completed in 2015 renewed the century-old sanctuary.
