Introduction

The Richardson Highway, also known as Alaska Route 4, is one of Alaska's most important north-south transportation arteries, extending about 368 miles from Fairbanks south to the port of Valdez. The highway was built along the historic Trans-Alaska Pipeline route, traversing the magnificent wilderness of Alaska's interior, and is a classic road trip route for experiencing Alaska's vast nature. Named after Civil War General William Richardson, the highway offers remarkably diverse scenery, from boreal forests near Fairbanks to alpine tundra at the foot of Denali, from Rocky Mountain glaciers to the fjord coast of Prince William Sound, with constantly changing and breathtaking landscapes. The highway's highest point, Thompson Pass at 2,681 feet elevation, is an excellent location for viewing the Northern Lights in winter. The route also passes Denali National Park and glacier hiking destinations, making it a golden route for Alaska road trips. Summer's extremely long daylight hours allow full enjoyment of the spectacular scenery along the way.
