Introduction
The Chicago Water Tower, built in 1869 on the northern stretch of Michigan Avenue, is one of Chicago's most recognizable historic landmarks. Standing about 47 meters tall, this Gothic Revival limestone tower originally housed a standpipe for the city's water pumping system to regulate water pressure. During the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 that destroyed much of the city, the water tower was one of the few public buildings to survive, and it has since become a symbol of Chicago's resilience. Elaborately carved to resemble a miniature European castle, it stands beside the equally surviving pumping station. Today the tower houses a free city gallery showing works by Chicago artists. Strolling the Magnificent Mile, this old tower offers a sudden glimpse of 19th-century lakefront Chicago, a perfect emblem of the city's blend of history and modernity.
