Introduction

The Oregon Historical Society at the south end of Portland's South Park Blocks is the authoritative institution for researching and presenting Oregon's complete history from indigenous times to the present. The Oregon History Museum on the upper floor uses artifacts, media, and interactive displays to trace the story from Native peoples, the Lewis and Clark expedition, and Oregon Trail migration to the modern state. The collection of over 80,000 artifacts and millions of historical photographs is one of the most important archives for Pacific Northwest history. The society also runs a research library and publishes the Oregon Historical Quarterly, with regular lectures and community education. It is both a public history museum and a scholarly institution, the key place to understand why Oregon became Oregon.
