Introduction
The First Church of Christ, Scientist is the Mother Church of the Christian Science religion, located on Massachusetts Avenue in Boston's Back Bay. Designed by Charles Brigham, the original church was completed in 1894, and a 1971 extension by I.M. Pei created a unique complex blending old and new. The Mother Church combines Byzantine Revival and Romanesque style, with a hemispherical dome and thick stone walls creating a solemn, mysterious interior that seats about 1,000. The extension is modernist, housing the world's largest Christian Science library and publishing operations. The reflecting pool and fountain around the church are among Boston's favorite public spaces, popular for sunbathing and meditation in summer.
